APMI West Penn Chapter holds May Meeting

The West Penn Chapter of the APMI International held their final monthly meeting at The Dam Inn, attended by over 60 industry professionals and sponsored Wire Mesh Products. The speaker for the evening, Rich Riva, presented the topic “Optimizing the Design of Wire Mesh Belts”. Rich spoke on the advantages of the different mesh patterns on their belts and what they are doing to develop new belt patterns and sizes to optimize performance.

Czinger Unveils the First Metal AM Aluminum Gearbox

Car manufacturer Czinger has unveiled a metal AM gearbox that was made using topological optimization. The 7-speed semi-sequential AM gearbox developed with Xtrac, Berkshire, England, was produced without any tooling with an aluminum alloy. The resulting gearbox has better structural performance with significant savings, and is a first for the automotive industry.

NASA Develops Twice-as-Strong 3D-Printed Alloy

NASA has demonstrated a breakthrough in metal additive manufacturing high-temperature materials that could lead to stronger, more durable parts for airplanes and spacecraft.  A team of researchers from NASA and Ohio State University detailed the characteristics of the new alloy, GRX-810, in a paper published in the journal Nature.

Powder Metallurgy in Sweden: 100 years of Development

The new book Powder Metallurgy in Sweden – 100 Years of Development provides an historical account of early PM research & development in Sweden from the 1920’s to the technology of today. It also shows how entrepreneurship and individual discoveries were groundbreaking for Swedish companies. The book is in English and is a compilation of nearly 70 authors, with long and extensive experience of all aspects of PM. It covers hard metals, sintered structural components, Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) of metal powders, diamond tools and metal AM.
